ABOUT!
Sophie Wheeless (they/she) is a Chicago based Theatrical artist from Houston, Texas. During their collegiate years, they focused their studies on the intersection between human expression and social psychology- exploring the ways in which Theatre must be a metaphysical experience.
They collaborated on many productions at Columbia College Chicago- and had an original play, Encephalon, produced by the college. Their final directing project, a production of The Nether by Jennifer Haley, was awarded a production scholarship. Along with their directorial work, they studied an array of philosophical schools of thought, feminist ideology, queer sociology, and participated in a variety of performance/visual art courses.
After graduating in 2024, they have spent their time experimenting with various genres and forms. Much of their recent work is rooted in the Theatre of the Absurd, and they take great inspiration from the writings of Antonin Artaud and Sarah Kane. In both comedic and dramatic settings, The Theory of Abjection remains a central focus of their creative interest. They have worked as a Director, Stage Manager, and Producer for multiple local theaters- with some recent credits at Chicago Dramatists, The Second City, and Rhinofest.
They are a co-founder and the Artistic Director for Slug Face Productions; A production group devoted to the comedic, absurd, and totally obscene.
